From the moment the pups were born until the day they went home, they were in my care. This is where I learned to groom, developing a versatile set of skills that can be applied to any coat, and any breed. At 15, I began training professionally for a local kennel while I continued to compete in 4H, taking overall grand champion in obedience 4 years in a row. In the morning before school I would head to work, then I would take my Water Spaniel Brynn to school with me. Because it’s me that travels to clients homes, conducts behavior evaluations, and keeps all client dogs in my family home, I think it’s important to tell my personal story as a trainer, and all around dog Behaviorist. I was raised by one of the best dog behaviorists in the world, who specializes in aggression and training based on dog genetics. Because I grew up in a kennel/training/daycare setting, the natural next step for me was joining 4H to begin my own journey in dog sports. I started at age 7 with my Papillon Peter Pan, and by age 9 I began showing Irish Water Spaniels in the AKC breed ring. I was one of the first female infantrymen that graduated OSUT. I've never backed down from a challenge, especially being one of the country's first female 11B’s. I was stationed at Fort Hood, 1CAV ALPHA 2-5, hence the name Cavalry Canine for my business. Tobias Keene, D.D.S. Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, Dr. Tobias Keene brings a bit of unabashed Southern hospitality to all his patients. He moved to Washington, D.C. over thirty years ago as a freshman at Ivy College. Right after graduation, he attended World University’s School of Dentistry. Before opening Keene Dental in 1994, he worked for free clinics and some of the finest practices in the District. He is part of the 123 Dental Association and stays up-to-date on the latest dental discoveries. Every dog has a unique personality and requires different techniques to achieve success. The four most basic reasons a dog comes to me are as follows: 1. Lack of discipline. The animal has too much control over its environment, and receives no consequence for acting out, leading to escalation of bad behavior. 2. Lack of communication. The animal doesn’t understand what you’re asking of them. 3. Lack of confidence. The animal has had mental or physical trauma that keeps them from responding to you, or needs more structure in their life as they mature. 4. Basic needs not met. I will always clearly communicate what behaviors I encourage by using rewards, and what behaviors need to be altered by using calm discipline. As stated above, the discipline can vary depending on the dog and the situation. A consistent, clear ‘good’ and ‘no’ are the first two words any training dog of mine will learn. I’ll always do whatever is necessary to educate your dog, because training is a must when living with any dog.
